According to the Arthritis Foundation, arthritis affects over 66 million Americans. Up to 1 in every 3 Americans suffers from this disease.

Symptoms include:

  • Joint pain, usually in the morning or at the end of the day
  • "Start up pain," i.e. difficulty getting up from a chair
  • Difficulty going up or down stairs
  • Joint swelling (inflammation) or warmth
  • Joint effusion (fluid build-up)
  • Stiffness
  • Joint deformity, i.e. worsening of bowleg or knock-knee
  • Crepitus, or the sensation of "grinding, creaking, or clicking"
  • Difficulty walking, perhaps needing a cane, crutches, or a walker

These symptoms may occur at any age, but are most common in people over 50. Other people affected may have:

  • A family history of arthritis, particularly with parents
  • Previous trauma to that limb, i.e. fracture near joint
  • Previous sports-related injury, i.e. torn ligament, cartilage, meniscus, or tendon
  • A long history of working in jobs that require heavy lifting
  • A long history of athletic participation

"Arthritis" refers to any disease process or condition that affects joints of the body.
